Egerton University Lecturers Threaten To Go On Strike

• The dons protested the move by the institution to declare redundancy amidst huge challenges that have been witnessed in the recent past that nearly crippled operations.
• They called on the government to take initiative to bring a new team of management to the university to help turn around the systems and help it to remain afloat.

Egerton University dons have threatened to strike following the institution’s notice of intent to declare redundancy issued in late December last year.

Speaking at the Special General Meeting of the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) Egerton branch, the officials led by Secretary Dr. Grace Kibue and Chairman Prof. Mwaniki Ngare protested the move by the institution amidst huge challenges that have been witnessed in the recent past that nearly crippled operations.

“The notice has come at a time when most of the lecturers have gone for greener pastures and most of them have been working for two years and they are surviving on half pay, it is terrible,” said Dr. Kibue.

Prof. Mwaniki, on his part, said that the institution has heavily mistreated its employees and turned them into the laughing stock of society.

“We have an employer who has injured workers and continues to injure workers, it’s unfortunate and we can’t allow this challenge to continue again,” he stated.
